Budget 2019 – review of R&D Tax changes
May 14, 2018 by Ben Thompson
The Budget for FY19 titled changes to the R&D Tax Incentive, “Protecting the integrity of the tax system”. On closer review of its implications I would suggest a more apt title being “Shaving more dollars on innovation in Australia”.
The Budget announcement included a sneaky bait-and-switch with the focus on policing efforts and carefully worded reductions.
Experimentation with software: where does R&D Tax fit in?
March 23, 2018 by Ben Thompson
When developing new software; differentiating every day run-of-the-mill activities from research and development can be complicated. Good governance and administration is key to sorting out this difference. Sometimes attempts at recording experimentation get lost in the supporting documentation. This can be attributed to a number of reasons, like a business cherry picking in the agile approach, or developers keeping records loosely in GitHub or inherent undocumented knowledge due to staff turnover.
We thought it would be a good idea to give you, the software company, examples of different approaches for good data capture. To ensure that you are capturing the experiment, to keep an evidence base and to prove that you are indeed eligible whilst keeping on top of your admin to ensure good governance and review.
R&D in an Agile workflow
March 3, 2018 by Ben Thompson
The Agile Manifesto says that the ‘better’ way of developing software is to focus on working software over comprehensive documentation. A lot of people think Agile means no documentation required. However, if you’re claiming R&D through the R&D Tax Incentive then there is a legislated requirement to keep contemporaneous documents of experimental activities and associated costs.

April Fool’s – Response to R&D Taxpayer Alert clickbait
April 1, 2017 by Ben Thompson
The ATO’s release of Taxpayer Alerts regarding the R&D Tax Incentive, and the relative deluge of freak-out responses from industry and consulting firms was, for better use of the term, a case of ‘fake news’.
